Summer Travel Tips for Older Adults

Do you feel travel is more difficult as you age? The idea of organizing a trip or even traveling alone can seem overwhelming but it shouldn’t stop you from exploring the world. We’ve put together some tips for travel as the summer season approaches.

Sign Up for TSA PreCheck or Global Entry

Simplify your airport experience by expediting your time at TSA checkpoints and customs. Not having to remove your shoes, belts or light jackets makes all the difference sometimes!

Consider a travel credit card

Travel credit card can be a great option for upcoming trips. Most travel cards offer awesome perks like access to different airport lounges, redeemable points, priority boarding, and deals on checked luggage.

Take advantage of discounts

Many airlines, hotels, restaurants, and other attractions offer discounts for older adults over the age of 60. You can contact each company directly or check their websites for more information on discounted rates.

Arrange for special accommodations prior to your trip

Whether you need a car service or wheelchair assistance, its best to plan this in advance to ensure you don’t encounter any confusion or potential delays on the day of departure or on your trip. It’s a good idea to schedule a ride share pick up for transportation to the airport or train station (if needed).

We also recommend contacting the hotel or bed & breakfast host for travel accommodations from the airport and throughout the duration of your stay, as they may provide the best and safest transportation options.

Aside from transportation needs, accommodations such as wheelchair assistance, expedited boarding, or additional legroom should be confirmed at least a week prior to your departure date.

Health and Medical Needs

If you are on any medications, Make sure your prescriptions are filled. Additionally, you may want to bring nausea medicine and pain killers just in case you or your companion need it.

If you are traveling to a foreign country, you may want to consider visiting your physician to ensure your vaccinations are up to date. Nothing spoils a trip like feeling ill! With that being said, some illnesses are inevitable such as food poisoning so be cautious about where you dine.

Invest in Travel Insurance

Delays happen, and sometimes its out of your control so its important to purchase travel insurance if your travel ticket or hotel reservation is non-refundable. Travel insurance ensures your trip is protected in case of an illness or unforeseen events, and you are guaranteed a refund.

Have fun!

When traveling to new places (or places you’ve already visited) take the time to enjoy the scenery, excursions, historical landmarks, and most importantly the people! This is a great opportunity to make new friends and connect with others who love to travel as much as you do.
