Celebrating Older Americans Month Now and Every Month

May is Older Americans Month (OAM), and the team at SSC is thrilled to recognize Older Americans this month and every month! The theme for OAM this year is #AgingUnbound which offers an opportunity to explore diverse aging experiences and discuss how communities can combat stereotypes.

In this week’s blog post, we will discuss what it means for older adults to experience aging without boundaries and the ways in which they can get involved in supportive and inclusive communities.

A lot of the time when we hear stereotypes about older adults, it's generally about cognitive or physical ability. When you think about it, we’re all guilty of tying negative experiences to aging. Simple things like forgetting to do something or minor details, or just getting older are seen as negative.

Perhaps we subconsciously and unintentionally connect these little things to age. According to a study conducted by Sarah Barber, a psychology and gerontology researcher at Georgia State University, older adults often say negative things about themselves because they believe there’s some truth to the stereotypes.

How can we change this? We have to continue to work towards changing the narrative!

Older adults CAN.

In fact, one of the best ways for older adults to remain active throughout aging is to get involved with a network of people who share similar interests. Although, it’s extremely possible to be self-motivated. It’s a great idea to join a community where your talents and hobbies are encouraged - and perhaps make a few friends along the way!

Aging without boundaries means doing what you love despite the stereotypes. It means continuous growth as you age and having fun in the process. Our bodies change as we age but it shouldn’t be seen as discouraging. Instead view it as an opportunity to explore new hobbies.

Platforms such as SecureSeniorConnections® encourage learning, growth, and fun. Because we’re virtual, it makes it more accessible and easier to work into your schedule. With activities such as photography, storytelling, and fitness groups, members are able to share their talents and experiences. As well as, live virtual events around your interests whether it’s fitness, dance, film, or ways to improve your health. Working towards a happier and healthier life is what we’re all about.

Overall, we must be kinder to ourselves as we continue to age. As stereotypes exist, it's important to continue to do the things you love and challenge these barriers. Aging Unbound is more than a theme, it’s a lifestyle!
