East New York, Brooklyn, NY: Artist/ Rapper, Jediii Karter
When did you start making music and what made you start?
I started writing, poetry and rhymes, when I was in 5th grade, but I didn't start really pursuing until 2013. Before that I wasn't really into music that much at all. My parents would play a lot of Kiss Fm and they only played classic soul, old school and current R&B. My father was a really big fan of Tupac and Lauryn Hill and my older brother listened to a lot of Jay-Z . So I was always around Hip-Hop but I didn't decide to pursue it until I was 21. I had started dancing when I was 12 and that was my life for 8 years. I still dance here and there but rapping has always been true passion for me so I decided to make that my mission.
Who is your inspiration?
I'm inspired by the entire Hip-Hop culture, the music, the movies, fashion, dancing and so on. I guess you can say I'm kind of a "Fan Artist" because I eat sleep and breathe Hip-Hop 24/7. I'm a huge fan of Jay-Z and Kanye West because they were the only ones to make me wanna hear more about life through rap and I could relate to them the most. I remember hearing The Black album for the first time and after that I heard Late Registration and from then I fell in love with Hip-Hop. My son is my greatest inspiration to me over everything. I do music because it's my passion but also I wanna provide a great life for my son.
What sets you apart from other artists?
One I feel like rappers now a days are kinda dependent on people and a lot of it can be done on your own. For example, I write my own raps (a lot of people don't), I make my own beats, and plus I'm just here for the love of hip hop. Most rappers just wanna be famous and live the whole "money cash hoes" lifestyle and that's not me. Rap was more diverse back in the golden era because everyone was being themselves and that how you got your style even your name from. I'm all about the advancement of knowledge and positivity. My music touches on the duality that people either don't know about or try to hide from. Everyone has good and evil in them and I choose to express my experiences with the goods and evils that I've experienced in my life.
Where do you see yourself 5 years from now?
Headlining at the Barclays, touring the globe, I don't wanna give away any of my ideas but just greater endeavors in all areas of Hip-Hop culture.
What do you hope to accomplish? Music and message wise?
Music wise, I want to be an inspiration to people, that's as simple as I can put it. I just want to be able to inspire other people the way I was inspired by all my predecessors.
What is your opinion on today's rap/hip hop?
A lot of it is trash. There's only a handful really good Hip-Hop artists out there that are actually rapping, let alone talking about something with substance. The rest are just recycling lines and flows for the check, I don't not knock it get your money but money only makes an already happy life happier. Majority of the people who listen to hip hop aren't happy with life and think money is the solution.
What are your views on hip hop controversy such as Iggy Azalea?
I feel like Iggy is just a puppet for a greater scheme to corrupt Hip-Hop and it's listeners. I don't have anything against white hip hop artists however I don't like the subtle racist things she does and says. It makes me feel like she is just here to be a mockery of the culture.
How would you describe your sound?
Whatever cool sounds. If you were to take Marvin Gaye, Batman, Gil Scott Heron, method man and Darth Vader, fuse em together and you'll have Jediii Karter.
