GAIUS NASA
Brooklyn, NY-- Designers, Gaius and Michi.
Hey ya'll, I'm back with another interview. So I happen to know some really dope people, as you all have seen in previous interviews. I got the pleasure of sitting down with the creators of this awesome clothing line Gaius Nasa; Gaius and Michelle. Shop their latest collection Thesis III at www.gaiusnasa.com
When did you start making clothing and what made you start?
Michi: Technically, I started making clothes at Parsons. Before that, in high school, I would just alter my own clothes with a needle and thread, but it wasn't until I got to Parsons that I started learning pattern making. From there I realized that I can make anything. But I was always interested in fashion as an art form--tradition and art of couture, editorials, campaigns, commerce of fast fashion, etc.
Gaius: I don't look at it as when I started making clothing, but I look at it as when I started my company and career. Michi and I started in 2012 because we wanted to express ourselves through fashion design. That isn't to say fashion is the only way we express ourselves, but it's one of the main mediums we use.
Where do you draw inspiration from?
G: Pretty much anywhere. Part of being an artist is being able to see potential in anything, and most of times, it's in things that people overlook. Circling back to your question, we draw inspiration from everywhere because we trained our eye to see beauty in everything.
M: We really do look at anything and everything, but it's not forced. It happens naturally. It might be something simple as a photograph, or something more complicated as a concept or a question, rather than a tangible thing.
What sets you apart from other up and coming designers?
G: Our brand was founded on the principle of being excellent- an idea of just taking everything you can to the highest possible level--not an attempt at being perfect, but more of an attempt at being the best version of yourself. Our logo represents that. We have a developed brand identity, and we offer a lot as an independent fashion brand. For instance, we make 100% of our graphics. I believe our graphics are right up there with Givenchy, Cav Empt, Christropher Kane, etc. I also think our patternmaking and technical design is at a high level. We design accessories, pants, tops, jackets, coats, unisex, women's, men's. In general, I don't view us as an up and coming brand, because we work with high standards.
M: We're more than just a fashion brand. We want to push positive energy and send out a positive message. Aesthetically speaking, I think we're set apart from others through patternmaking and graphics, like Gaius mentioned.
Where do you see yourself and your brand 5 years from now?
M: I see us continuing to build and grow in every way possible--from collections and presentations to collaborations and business expansion.
G: I see us expanding to Asia and Europe and collaborating with multiple artists and designers. And I see our brand becoming more than just clothing. We want to expand to other products: stuffed animals, galleries, events, etc.
What do you hope to accomplish in the near future?
G: I want to do as many interviews as we can and spread the message of Gaius Nasa--be excellent. We are a company that spends hours on one idea and works to make it as great as we can. We have focus groups, meetings and work sessions to perfect everything we put out there. We want to get this message across the world. As cheesy as it sounds there's a lot of messages that I heard that aren't positive. We just want to push the idea of being better--being the best you can be. Obviously we want to lead by example but I think there's a lot of philosophies that are woven into the fabric of our clothing that could really enhance the minds of people willing to listen.
M: Keeping the momentum and continuing to build!
How would you describe your brand, style?
M: Style-wise, our brand is kind of its own thing. I think we were more interested in building our own world, so I guess our style is distinctly Gaius Nasa.
G: Yeah I would totally have to agree with Michi, I also don't really use too many descriptive words when asked about our style because I don't want to box myself into a category that would restrict future growth and experimentation.
What does your brand name mean ?
G: I dont want to give up the meaning, but I'll give a hint. It's a combination of names, and one word. Kind of like a puzzle. It actually is really important to us.
M: We'll tell the world what it means one day, for now its kind of like a puzzle.
