The Trap Yoga Bae Experience - Trap Yoga NYC
You know those experiences you're a hundred percent sure you will never forget, just because of how dope it was? The TrapYogaBae experience was one of those. For those of you unfamiliar with Trap Yoga, it is yoga accompanied by trap music, twerking and aligning your chakras. I was hoping and wishing and waiting for TrapYogaBae (Britteny) to teach her class in New York City. So when it finally happened I bought my ticket without hesitation. Of course I had plans of taking this class with my friends, but you know life happens and I was solo trappin. However, I didn't feel so alone once I arrived at the studio; for one I was not the only one who showed up by themselves, and two I remembered I have been waiting for this, this moment was for me.
I remember when I first followed TrapYogaBae on Instagram, my initial thoughts were:
" I don't know anything about yoga but her class looks so dope!"
"Finally a yoga class that is relatable!"
Not knowing anything about yoga, I felt inspired and decided to try it at my gym. The first couple of classes were pretty difficult because I had no clue what a vinyasa or chaturanga dandasana was or how to do it without looking weird. I felt I wasn't flexible enough, and I felt yoga was not helping me align my chakras and connect with myself the way the instructors said I should. My body felt relaxed but my mind was not at peace. It was not until I took TrapYogaBae's class that I was able to connect, because she was talking about real things. I was going through my vinyasa, thinking "yes sis I feel you," nodding my head in agreeance to her ratchet affirmations. For the first time ever, I felt like I walked away from a yoga class with more than a good stretch and workout. I took everything she said and applied it to my life immediately. She discussed relationships and that sometimes we spend time concerned about people who are the least bit concerned about us, and the power of "no" in which it does not require an explanation. TrapYogaBae took us to church! Her overall message was to love ourselves first unapologetically. I left feeling inspired and feeling like "that girl".
I believe there are people in this world who are filled with such light, positivity, and authentic energy that they are able to share that with others. As a woman of color, as a black woman, that is amazing because sometimes we give each other such a hard time. So when I see black women uplifting other black women it makes me genuinely happy. TrapYogaBae has such as dope and authentic vibe, and that is what makes her class so unique and fun (i.e. twerking chaturangas dandasanas).
So thank you to the strong and positive black women such as Britteny doing amazingly dope things for themselves and women of color -- creating spaces for us to share and express love and light.
